Designing with Purpose: How to Create What Truly Matters

Designing with purpose isn’t just about creating beautiful things, it’s about making stuff that actually matters. Whether I’m designing as a creative, hosting an event, or even making big life decisions, this mindset is always my north star. Because let’s be real, building something “cool” that doesn’t add value is like shouting into the void. People might say, “Oh, nice,” but they’re not sticking around for more.

Ask Yourself the Big Questions

Whenever I’m designing, building, or starting something new, I pause and ask myself these key questions:

1. Who is this for?

  • Is it for me? My audience? My loved ones?

2. Why make this?

  • Am I solving a problem, or am I just adding noise?

3. What’s already out there?

  • How is my thing better or different from what exists?

Answering these helps me focus on creating value—whether that’s entertainment, connection, or even just curing boredom. Not every idea has to solve a billion-dollar problem; it just needs a purpose.

Building with Intention

Purpose-driven design doesn’t stop at asking questions. It’s about sharing your work, getting feedback, and iterating. I’ve learned that spending hours on something without knowing if it’s meaningful can lead to burnout—or worse, wasted time. But at the same time, don’t get stuck in overthinking mode. Action is greater than perfection.

Applying This to Life

This approach isn’t just for work; it’s how I design my life too.

1. Who is this for?

  • Most of the time, it’s for myself. But sometimes, it’s for family, friends, or even future me.

2. Why make this decision?

  • For example, when I decided to become a digital nomad instead of taking the traditional 9-to-5 route, I had to dig deep:
    • Was I avoiding rejection from job applications during a wave of layoffs?
    • Was it curiosity driving me to try something different?

3. What are the alternatives?

  • I considered just getting a stable job and traveling on the side. But imagining that life made me realize I’d feel stuck, and this nomad path felt more me.

Why Purpose Matters

Being super intentional about what you create—whether it’s a passion project, a big life shift, or a tiny tweak to your routine, is how you make meaningful progress. Purpose keeps you grounded and ensures you’re not just busy but actually building something worthwhile.

So the next time you’re about to start something, ask yourself:
Who is this for? Why am I doing this? And how can I make it better?

Your life and your work will thank you ❤
