When it comes to finding a good spot to eat, Google isn’t always your best friend—especially if you’re looking for places that vibe. After a few not-so-great dining experiences, I realized that Google Maps reviews can be misleading. Here’s how I actually find the best restaurant and cafe recommendations, no matter where I am.
Why I Don’t Rely on Google Maps for Food Recommendations
Let’s talk Google Maps.
While it might work for some, my experiences have proven that it’s not always reliable. For example, I once went to a super hyped Italian restaurant in NYC with a 4.7-star rating and thousands of glowing reviews. I was expecting an amazing experience but instead got frozen bread, bland pasta, and the rudest service. That was when I learned that high ratings don’t always mean quality. Google tends to favor touristy spots, and its reviews are often left by people who might not have the same taste as me. Plus, younger people—who tend to have the hottest recos—don’t usually leave reviews on Google. They’re more likely to post on social media instead.
My Top Tips for Finding Solid Restaurant & Cafe Recommendations
Now that Google Maps is out, here are my favorite ways to find food spots I actually like:
1. TikTok
The algorithm on TikTok is honestly a game-changer for recommendations. It quickly learns your preferences, so you’re more likely to get spots tailored to your taste. Just type in what you’re craving and the location, like “best brunch in Chicago” or “cute cafes in Tokyo.” You’ll get short, straight-to-the-point video recos from people who might be in the same demographic and vibe as you. TikTok is also great for visually seeing the atmosphere and food, so you know exactly what to expect.
2. Bloggers
Bless travel bloggers who document their experiences in detail! They’ve usually done the legwork and found hidden gems, unique spots, and can give detailed insights on food and ambiance. I’m one of them, so if you’re looking for food and travel recos, check out the Local Finds tab on my website. I post pics, detailed notes, and honest takes on places I visit.
Bloggers in your age group or with a similar vibe can be a goldmine of info. I love finding food bloggers who look for the same things in a place—like a cozy vibe, good coffee, or cute decor. Their recos tend to align with my taste, so I can trust their recommendations.
3. Ask Your Grab or Uber Driver
If you’re traveling and you’re looking for a more authentic experience, your driver is probably one of the best people to ask. Drivers know what locals love and which spots have genuinely good food. When I was in Da Nang, we got restaurant recos from our driver, and every single place he suggested was amazing. He took us off the beaten path to some local places I wouldn’t have found on my own, and those meals ended up being highlights of the trip.
4. Connect with Other Nomads Online
Social media is your friend! You can make online connections through Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok and get recos from people who know the area. Online friends are always ready to share their fave spots and warn you about places to avoid. Plus, some might even have spreadsheets or guides that make your travel planning easier.
5. Post on Your Story
Sometimes, the best recommendations come from friends who share your taste. Put up a quick story asking for food or cafe recos, and you’ll be surprised by the responses. I have friends who travel super organized (like with actual spreadsheets of all the spots they’ve been to), so I can get a full list of tried-and-true spots without doing much research myself.
