My Top 5 Work-Friendly Cafés in Downtown Vancouver

As a digital nomad with Vancouver as my home base, I’ve had the opportunity to explore a variety of cafés downtown, some of which have been incredible, while others, not so much.

Surprisingly, downtown Vancouver isn’t my favorite spot to work. It might sound counterintuitive, but most cafés in the area are often too busy, too noisy, or just not welcoming to those of us who like to set up camp with a laptop for a few hours. That said, it’s always important to be mindful of remote-working etiquette.

But don’t worry—I’ve managed to curate a list of hidden gems that are laptop-friendly, have good Wi-Fi, and serve up a decent cup of coffee. These are my go-to spots when I’m working solo—not necessarily the prettiest or most charming cafés in Vancouver, but perfect for getting work done. Stay tuned for another list featuring my favorite spots to simply enjoy a great coffee!

When putting together this list, I considered the following criteria:

  • Wi-Fi quality
  • Availability of plugs
  • Coffee quality
  • Food options
  • Overall laptop-friendliness

Here are my top picks:

1. Café Monet

568 Robson St, Vancouver, BC V6B 2B7

Café Monet offers a self-serve Asian bakery style for their baked goods. I tried the almond croissant, and it was pretty good—definitely worth the price, which is around $10 for a drink and pastry combo.

The location is a bit sketchy, so I recommend being cautious when walking there. Inside, the café has a light, airy, and modern vibe that I really enjoyed.

The Wi-Fi speed is fantastic, with 146 Mbps download and 119 Mbps upload, making it perfect for work. When I visited on a weekday afternoon, most people had their laptops out, which made it feel even more welcoming for work.

Once you’re done with your coffee, you’re in a prime spot with plenty of great food options nearby and the Vancouver Public Library just around the corner—perfect for a quick change of scenery.

2. JJ Bean Coffee Roasters on Alberni

425 Dunsmuir St, Vancouver, BC V6B 2A4

I love starting my workday here, especially in the early morning before the office crowd rushes in. Be warned: the line can get pretty long as office workers stop by for their morning fix.

There are no plugs available, and table space is limited, with only about four standalone tables and a big bartop table—the rest are lounge setups, which aren’t the best for working on a laptop.

That said, the staff are incredibly nice, and their lattes are delicious. I’m also a huge fan of their zucchini chocolate muffin, though it often sells out quickly.

While the Wi-Fi isn’t the best, if you have unlimited data and don’t mind a bit of a challenge, this place is still a great spot. Plus, the café is filled with natural light, so you won’t feel like you’re working in a dungeon. The chilled R&B music adds to the relaxed atmosphere. If you don’t mind sitting outside, there are additional tables available, making it a decent option for work.

3. Trees Organic Coffee Davie St

1160 Davie St, Vancouver, BC V6E 1N1

Trees on Davie isn’t my favorite spot aesthetically—it feels a bit like a cafeteria—but it’s my go-to for a quiet and productive work session. The café is spacious, with plenty of tables and chairs, and it’s rarely too crowded.

The Wi-Fi is decent, and while the coffee isn’t anything to write home about, it does the job. Trees is known for their cheesecake, so this spot is ideal for a late-night work session with a dessert and decaf coffee.

There are plugs available along the walls, and the booth seating adds to the comfort. It’s quiet and functional, and because it feels like a chain, I don’t feel guilty about taking up space for a few hours. I always see others working on their laptops here, so you won’t be alone.

4. Good Earth Coffeehouse – Robson

2505 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6H 3G7

Located on top of Indigo on Robson, Good Earth Coffeehouse is tucked away in a corner near the escalator. It’s a great spot in the early morning or at noon when it’s not too noisy, though it does get busier in the afternoon and evening.

While the coffee and food aren’t my favorites (I’ll be honest, they’re not that great), the café is usually pretty empty, so you won’t feel bad taking up a spot for an extended period.

They have plugs along the walls and beneath the booth chairs, with plenty of tables and natural light streaming in. The Wi-Fi is adequate, and there’s a washroom inside Indigo that you can use. Overall, it’s a decent spot if you’re looking for somewhere quiet with lots of seating.

5. PappaRoti on Robson

1505 Robson St, Vancouver, BC V6G 1C3

PappaRoti is a solid choice for afternoons and evenings. They have a nice selection of baked goods, and the coffee is decent. It’s a popular spot for laptop work, and there are plenty of plugs available. I usually try to grab a spot at the big table in the back, where most people are working on their laptops.

Just a tip: I wouldn’t recommend getting baked goods that aren’t covered towards the end of the day—they tend to dry out.

The staff are friendly, and the coffee buns are absolutely delicious. Overall, it’s a super reliable spot for getting some work done while enjoying a snack.

I hope this list helps you find a great spot to get some work done the next time you’re in downtown Vancouver. If you’ve got any favorite work-friendly cafés that I missed, let me know—I’m always on the lookout for new places to try!
