Common Liquid Swaps for Travel
We’ve all been there—getting products thrown away at airport security because they’re over the 100ml limit (yep, I was hoping they wouldn’t notice too). But after many flights and trips, I’ve discovered some great alternatives to liquid products, so I don’t have to worry about going over the limit. Plus, it helps me save my liquid allowance for the really important stuff (like Pepto if you’re heading somewhere like Bali).
Here are some of my favorite swaps:
1. Hand Soap → Single-Use Soap Paper
Some bathrooms don’t have hand soap, so I always carry mini single-use hand soap sheets. They’re super compact and dissolve easily in water, making them a perfect travel companion.
2. Makeup Products → Balm & Stick Formats
I’m obsessed with Merit products for travel. Their balms and sticks are a lifesaver for reducing liquids:
- The Minimalist Foundation Stick: Easy to apply and doesn’t count toward your liquid limit. I really like this for humid and tropical countries because it looks great even after sweating.
- Balm Blush: Perfect for adding a natural blush.
- Highlighter Balm: Adds a gorgeous glow without the hassle of liquids.

3. Perfume → Muji Mini Scent Holder
Instead of carrying liquid perfume, I use Muji’s mini scent holder. It’s compact, solid, and mess-free. Just swipe it on, and you’re good to go. I also have seen cheaper ones (seems to work similarly) on Amazon.
4. Makeup Remover → Cleansing Balm
Swap liquid makeup remover for a cleansing balm. It’s solid, compact, and just as effective at taking off makeup without the risk of spills. I use the small version of the Jual DUO makeup remover balm.
5. Shampoo & Conditioner → Solid Bars
Solid shampoo and conditioner bars are a game-changer for travel. They’re long-lasting, easy to pack, and take up no space in your liquid allowance.
6. Body Soap → Solid Bar Soap
Instead of liquid body wash, I always bring a solid body soap. It’s simple and frees up space for other essentials.
7. Sunscreen Stick

A sunscreen stick is my go-to for reapplying SPF on the go (I throw one in every purse). It’s compact, mess-free, and doesn’t count as a liquid!
Here are some sunscreen sticks I like and have seen often online:
Beauty Ronde Sunscreen Stick + Insect Repellent in One
Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick
8. Tinted Lip Balm → Skip Lip Gloss
I prefer to use a tinted lip balm instead of lip gloss. It’s hydrating, adds a hint of color, and won’t be counted in your liquids.
Final Thoughts
By making a few simple swaps, you can breeze through airport security without worrying about liquid limits. These alternatives are compact, practical, and perfect for travelers looking to lighten their load.
